I would gladly pay $500 for this camera if I had to, it’s just that good. I used to drag around my NIKON DX when inspecting homes, but after Hurricane Harvey hit my hometown, I decided I needed something a little more compact, durable, lighter yet good enough to provide me with HD quality photos in all conditions. I love the blue tooth capability considering I take on average about 250 photos a day while inspecting homes. The batter life is outstanding, and I have only noticed a drop in battery life since the temperature dropped to below 40 in the Houston area. Other than that, this camera is very easy to use, and feels very sturdy and well built for such a small camera. The camera is only 4″ wide, which is great for carrying around, but if you have large hands or you are used to larger camera’s, like NIKON DX’s, it will take some time to get use to. Think of it like going from an iphone 7 plus back to an original iphone. Highly recommend purchasing this camera.

- Display Size and Resolution: Large 3 inch LCD that comes with 461,000 dots, and images are even visible at a wide angle
- Wi-Fi Capabilities: Like the SX620, you get built-in wi-fi that allows for easy sharing of your pictures between your camera and your smartphone, enabled by Canon Image Gateway. You can also print directly to a PictBridge certified printer. Also features NFC technology, enabling connection with a device with a single tap
- Low Light Performance: The Digic 6 Image Processor helps boost light sensitivity to improve image quality in low light conditions
What Sets the Canon PowerShot SX540 Apart
As mentioned earlier, the zoom power on this little camera is a great feature for the price of the camera. In addition, the camera allows for remote shooting with the Camera Connect App. This app gives you pretty much full camera capabilities, giving you the option to be more flexible when shooting
Cons of the Canon PowerShot SX540
- Video quality is only 1080P

I wanted to upgrade my old Canon Powershot elph. I really didn’t want to go the route of the full blown 35mm DSLR. After extensive research and reading tons of reviews I decided on this model. It is a great camera, especially for someone not wanting a full blown 35MM. Takes great pics in auto mode but there still are plenty of options in manual mode. I chose the Case Logic camera bag DCB-304. It is big enough to fit all my accessories (2 battery charger with 2 additional batteries, portable small power pack, extra sd cards and various small cables) and yet not big at all. Very satisfied with the camera and bag.

Not gonna lie, I have been an Olympus fan for many years. But when I dropped my point and shoot Olympus and discovered they didn’t make that particular model with the super zoom and features that I wanted, I had to go looking. I was not happy about having to change camera models because the beauty of the Olympus cameras that I have previously owned, the batteries/chargers/camera cases were all interchangeable, so I could keep on using perfectly good batteries with the new camera. Long story short, I am thrilled with this Nikon Coolpix – the zoom capability is superior to my previous Olympus cameras, the features are pretty much equivalent to what I was used to and the photos I’m getting are stunning! This camera was very affordable and the battery charger/batteries are reasonably priced. The more I learn about the camera functions, the better my photos are – I am a Nikon convert, this is a great little camera!!

- Video quality is lower than most other cameras on this list
- No wifi or alternate method for transferring images to your other devices
Useful Review
This extremely light weight camera is excellent for the price. The Zeiss lens and 21MP do an excellent job at capturing the moments. The only downside is it has a very small sensor, the smallest on the market, so darker images will be more difficult. The upside is that the new technology makes it functional. It is one of the cheapest cameras on the market with grade image stabilization. It also has a built in sharpen feature you can enable. It has the program feature like older CyberShot and other point and shoot cameras. The colors are vivid and all around it seems well built. I purchased an Otg cable on Amazon for less than $4 and uploaded my photos to my phone. The battery seems to last long.
6 | Sony DSC-WX350
The Sony DSC-WX350 is a great quality point and shoot camera that comes at a relatively affordable price. This camera has dimensions of 3.78 x 1.01 x 2.16 inches and only weighs 4.8 ounces.

This camera comes with several neat shooting options, including Motion-Shot video, to trace the movement of subjects; Picture Effect for expressive photos; Sweep panorama mode, and incredibly smooth images and pictures, enabled by the BIONZ X processor and Optical Steady Shot.
Cons of the WX350
- Does not feature 20 MP
- Video quality is only 1080P
Useful Review
I’m not a skilled photographer by any means but the quality of shots I can produce in Intelligent Auto mode frequently drop my jaw. The digital zoom is garbage, but you can lock it out and use just the optical. This also happens to be the nicest and smallest 1080p/60 video camera I own so I frequently use that feature as well without any hiccups at all so far. I can record about 7000 shots at 18MP or ~5 hours of 1080/60 video onto a 32gb card.
This camera never leaves my side on vacation and it’s effortless to pocket or put on a belt clip. There’s more depth and features to the camera than I have time to review, but I wanted to offer my general sentiments and some shots I’ve taken using this model. It is definitely worth considering if you want to step up the quality of your effortlessly shot vacation photos. If you want something more technical or professional, you should probably look elsewhere.
7 | Panasonic Lumix ZS50

What Sets the Panasonic Lumix ZS50 Apart
The real viewfinder is a nice feature that most cameras on this list don’t have. In addition, you have the option to shoot in RAW, meaning that you can have the maximum flexibility in photo editing. Macro shots and time-lapse photography are also supported by this camera.
Cons of the Lumix ZS50
- Video quality could be better
- At 12.1 megapixels, the image quality is a bit lower than other cameras on this list
Useful Review
I’ve owned 5 different Lumix cameras before and this is by far the best. Here are some reasons: 1) It is a compact camera that has an optical view finder to help you when it is really bright out and the video screen is impossible to see. 2) Also placing the camera against your cheek to frame allows you to hold the camera steadier in low light situations. 3) It’s CMOS sensor is superior in low light to the ccd type. 4) Better rubber grips to hold on to. 5) Bigger zoom. 6) Wifi – allows you to post check-in shots directly to FaceBook. 7) Also, same old Leica quality lens, quality video, creative controls, long lasting battery and Panasonic reliability. You get the idea. This camera is a winner.
8 | Panasonic Lumix FZ80
The Panasonic Lumix FZ80 is nearly the perfect point-and-shoot camera. It’s a bit larger than the ZS50. This camera has dimensions of 4.69 x 5.13 x 3.71 inches and weighs 1.36 lbs.

- Wi-Fi Capabilities: The Panasoic Lumix FZ80 comes with built-in Wi-Fi, allowing for easy transfer to your other devices
- Low Light Performance: Low light performance is deemed as “impressive” by Panasonic
What Sets the Panasonic Lumix FZ80 Apart
In addition to the 4K video and super zoom, this camera has a really cool “post focus” feature, that allows you to set desired focus points after the photo is taken.
Cons of the Lumix FZ80
- Difficult to capture moving subjects in low light
- Not water resistant or dust resistant
- Price may rise if not on sale
Useful Review
This is a great all rounder camera. The unbelievable zoom allows me to get really close to my subject and the video quality is fantastic! Super high resolution and bitrate. Packed full of features like 4k photo and post focusing are awesome. 4k photo allows you to take 30 photos a second so you make sure you catch the perfect action shot and the post focus mode allows you to take a picture and pick the focal point after the picture has been taken! Best bridge camera I’ve ever used and I own a Nikon p900.

What Sets the Kodak Pixpro Astro Zoom AZ252-RD Apart
This camera offers a wider angle than most digital cameras do, making it great for landscape shots. In addition, you get 22 different scene models that allow you to be as creative as you like with your pictures.
Cons of the Kodak Astro Zoom
- Doesn’t feature wi-fi or NFC technology
- Limited low-light image support
Useful Review
Replacement for my older model Z-5010 which still takes good photos but the recycle time between shots has increased. The AZ-252 uses standard AA batteries and the 25X zoom is about the hand-held limit. The 14 or 16 MP files have more than enough detail for processing. The camera is light-weight, carries easily in a waist pack and the lens cap fits tightly. I find the pressure for focus preview on the shutter button is a bit too sensitive and I wind up with a few inadvertent photos. Very good camera for the price with more features than I will ever use.
10 | Fujifilm FinePix XP120
The Fujifilm FinePix XP120 is another fun camera that can be used for underwater shots. This camera has dimensions of 6.00 x 8.00 x 2.00 inches and weighs 1.00 lbs.

So if you can’t tell, this camera is durable and ready to go along with you on any of your adventures.
Cons of the Fujifilm FinePix
- Zoom feature is limited

Useful Review
Easy to operate, good clarity, no need for any cover box, great price point! Takes pics and movies:)
Why You Need a Digital Camera
Many people tend to think that their built-in camera phones are all they need for photography, but the reason to expand a bit is because they still have limited features. These largest of these limitations include:
- Megapixels don’t extend past 12MP in nearly all cases
- Zoom is limited to up to 4x Zoom
If either of these features are important to you, then getting a digital camera is something that you should seriously consider. I don’t expect any major advances in these features on cameras in the near future, given that cameras are so small and thin.
Considerations When Purchasing a Digital Camera
As you can likely tell from the reviews listed above there are a few key areas that you should consider when selecting your digital camera:
- Image Quality: The goal is to get megapixels as high as possible for better quality photos and improved ability to edit photos
- Zoom Quality: The higher the zoom number the more success you’ll have in taking those close up photos. Note, it’s important to look for the optical zoom support, as zoom quality deteriorates once it moves to digital
- Video Quality: The best quality that you can get today is 4K video – that’s most ideal. Next best is 1080p – I recommend not going lower than this if video quality is important to you
- Display Size and Resolution: The more dots featured in your LCD viewfinder, the better quality your digital viewfinder will be. Also, any camera that has a standard viewfinder provides an added bonus since you’ll have great visibility no matter how bright the sun is
- Wi-Fi Capabilities: This is a matter of preference, but most of us want a camera that will allow easy transfer or pictures to your other electronic devices
- Low Light Performance: Shooting in low light can be very difficult, particularly at night, so the more support you have here, the better
In Summary | Best Cameras Under $300
That concludes this list of the best cameras under $300. If you are still having trouble deciding, here are a few superlatives that you might find helpful:
- Best All Around: Nikon Coolpix A900
- Highest Quality Still Images: Canon Powershot SX540
- Best Quality Videos: Panasonic Lumix FZ80
- Best Underwater Camera: Fujifilm FinePix XP120
- Best Camera for Kids: Nikon Coolpix W150
